Many consider medical support as part of their plan when embarking on a weight loss journey. Weight loss pills, for example, can be an effective tool when combined with healthy lifestyle changes. But how do you bring up this sensitive topic with your doctor?

This guide will help you feel prepared to discuss weight loss medications with your health care provider and decide the best path for your needs.

How can I prepare for a doctor’s visit to discuss weight loss treatment?

Preparation is key when discussing weight loss treatments with your doctor. Before your appointment, gather the following:1

  • Medical history. Include details about any chronic conditions, medications, allergies or past weight loss efforts.

  • Current lifestyle habits. Document your eating patterns, alcohol intake, physical activity and sleep habits.

  • Goals. Be ready to share your weight loss goals, including how much you’d like to lose and why.

  • Questions. Write down any concerns or topics you’d like to discuss.

Additionally, be honest about your struggles. This transparency helps your doctor recommend a plan tailored to your needs.

What questions should I ask a doctor about weight loss medications?

Ask your provider questions to help you maximize results, minimize side effects and set realistic expectations. Use these example questions to get started:

  • What weight loss medications are available and how do they work?

  • Are these medications safe for someone with my health profile?

  • What are the potential side effects and risks?

  • How much weight can I expect to lose with this medication?

  • How long will I need to take the medication?

  • Do I need to make specific lifestyle changes while on this medication?

What weight loss medications should I consider?

There are several clinically proven weight loss medications available. Popular options include:2

Semaglutide (Wegovy®, Ozempic®, RYBELSUS®). A GLP-1 receptor agonist that helps regulate appetite, lower blood sugar in type 2 diabetics and is often prescribed for long-term weight management. It is available in oral tablet or injectable form. In a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine, participants lost an average of 15% of their body weight after 68 weeks of semaglutide use.3

Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®, Zepbound®). A GLP-1 medication that targets both glucose control and appetite suppression, showing significant weight loss results in studies. It is available in oral tablet or injectable form. In one clinical study of tirzepatide, participants lost an average of 20.9% of their body weight after 72 weeks.4

Naltrexone-Bupropion (Contrave®). An oral combination medication that can reduce appetite and aid in weight loss. Naltrexone is an opioid antagonist prescribed to treat alcohol and drug addiction. Bupropion is an antidepressant and smoking cessation medication.

Orlistat (Alli®). A lipase inhibitor that works by preventing fat from being absorbed by the intestine.5

Phentermine-topiramate (Qsymia®). A combination drug that aids weight loss by decreasing appetite and producing lasting feelings of fullness. Phentermine belongs to a class of medications called anorectics and topiramate is an anticonvulsant.6

Why might a doctor not prescribe weight loss pills?

Your doctor may decide against prescribing weight loss pills for several reasons, including:7

  • Medical contraindications. Certain conditions, like high blood pressure or a family history of thyroid disease, can make weight loss medications unsafe. There also may be negative interactions with other medications you currently take.

  • Minimal need. If your BMI is below the medication threshold, your provider may suggest using lifestyle changes to lose any cosmetic weight.

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding. Many weight loss medications are not safe for use during these periods.

What can I expect if I start taking weight loss pills?

Every individual will respond to weight loss pills differently; however, there are some similarities in the common experience. Once prescribed weight loss pills, you can expect the following:

  • Initial dosing. Most medications start with a low dose that increases gradually to minimize side effects.

  • Lifestyle changes. Combining medication with a healthy diet and exercise is essential for success.

  • Monitoring. Regular follow-ups with your doctor will ensure the medication is working as intended.

  • Potential side effects. Some common side effects from weight loss medications include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, headache and tiredness. Not everyone will experience the same side effects.

  • Gradual weight loss. In clinical studies, weight loss medications helped participants lose up to 21% of their body weight over an extended period, more than a year in many studies.13 A healthy weight loss goal is approximately one to two pounds per week.14
