The beauty world is crowded with advice on how to grow thicker and longer lashes. Understanding what methods or products will work for you can be challenging.

Read on to learn what products are clinically proven to visibly improve your lashes and which lack the science to support their claims.

What makes eyelashes grow?

Several factors, including genetics, hormones and the immune system, can contribute to eyelash growth.1 Lifestyle factors like diet and the products you apply to your lashes can affect their health and growth.2

How fast do eyelashes grow naturally?

Chart Showing the Three Stages to Eyelash Growth - Growth Phase, Degradation Phase, Resting Phase

The lifecycle of an eyelash is approximately four to 11 months and grows between 0.12 and 0.14 millimeters per day. There are three stages to eyelash growth:3

  • The growth phase (anagen phase) lasts between four and 10 weeks.

  • Degradation phase (catagen phase). The eyelash stops growing and the hair follicle starts to shrink.

  • The resting phase (telogen phase) is when the eyelash falls out.

Does crying make your eyelashes longer?

There is no evidence that crying makes eyelashes longer. However, tears may temporarily provide a visual effect of darker or straighter lashes because of the moisture.4

Do natural remedies such as coconut oil or Vaseline help eyelashes grow?

There is no scientific evidence to support that any home remedies will help eyelashes grow. It’s not recommended to use natural remedies for eyelash growth, including:5

      • Coconut oil

      • Vaseline (petroleum jelly)

      • Castor oil

      • Jojoba oil

      • Olive oil

      • Rosemary oil

      • Aloe vera
