Adult ADHD Treatment FAQs

  • There are two main categories for adult ADHD meds: stimulants and nonstimulants.1 Common nonstimulant adult ADHD medications include:2

    Common stimulant ADHD medications include:3

    • Methylphenidate hydrochloride (Ritalin®, Concerta®)

    • Dexmethylphenidate hydrochloride (Focalin®)

    • Dextroamphetamine mixed salts and amphetamine (Adderall®)

    • Lisdexamfetamine dimesylate (Vyvanse®)

  • ADHD medications work by boosting certain brain chemicals — such as dopamine or norepinephrine — that help improve attention, calm restlessness, and reduce impulsive behavior.4

    • Stimulant medications tend to start working more quickly by increasing those brain chemicals directly, so many people feel relief in a few hours.

    • Non-stimulant medications, on the other hand, work more gradually by adjusting norepinephrine (and sometimes dopamine) may take several weeks to work, but have a lower risk of addiction.5

  • Stimulants can be effective in treating ADHD symptoms, but they often come with unwanted side effects like dry mouth, nausea and loss of appetite. Stimulants can work quickly, and the effects can last for several hours depending on the type of stimulant medication used.6

Nonstimulant medications for ADHD tend to have fewer side effects, and they also do not pose the risk of abuse or addiction like stimulant medication. However, it can take weeks for nonstimulant medications to fully work.7

  • No, there are not currently any approved over-the-counter medications available for adult ADHD.8

  • At RedBox Rx, adult ADHD medication is available for as low as $25 per month for a three-month supply, or $30 per month for one-month supply. There are no additional subscription or membership fees associated with these medication costs. We're able to offer low prices on ADHD medications because we purchase directly from manufacturers and ship from our pharmacy in Iowa.

  • It can take up to four to eight weeks for users to feel the full benefits of nonstimulant ADHD medications. If the medication is working, users will see a reduction in ADHD symptoms like inattention, hyperactivity and impulsiveness.9

For stimulant ADHD medications, results are more immediate. Users can feel reduction in ADHD symptoms in less than an hour. Stimulant medications can be habit forming and should only be taken under direct supervision of a physician.10

  • Common side effects of nonstimulant ADHD medication include:11

    • Nausea and loss of appetite

    • Constipation

    • Dry mouth

    • Headache

    • Fatigue

    • Decreased libido

Common side effects of stimulant ADHD medication include:12

    • Decrease or loss of appetite

    • Weight loss

    • Sleep issues

    • Irritability

    • Tics

  • A licensed medical professional, like at RedBox Rx, can prescribe nonstimulant ADHD medications. This includes medical doctors and nurse practitioners.

RedBox Rx doesn’t prescribe stimulant medications at this time.

  • Yes, you can get nonstimulant ADHD medication online (if prescribed) through RedBox Rx.

Stimulant medications used to treat ADHD are classified as Schedule II controlled substances by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under the Controlled Substances Act. Prescribing these medications through telehealth is regulated by both federal and state laws, which are subject to change and can vary by location.13 RedBox Rx doesn’t prescribe stimulant medications at this time.
