Ketoconazole 2% Cream FAQs
-
Ketoconazole is used to treat skin infections such as athlete’s foot, jock itch, ringworm and yeast infections on the skin. This medication is also used to treat a skin condition known as pityriasis, a fungal infection that causes a lightening or darkening of the skin of the neck, chest, arms or legs. Ketoconazole is in a class of antifungal medications called imidazoles. It works by slowing the growth of fungi that cause infection.

Prescription ketoconazole comes as a cream to apply to the skin. Ketoconazole cream is usually applied once or twice a day for two to six weeks. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Use ketoconazole exactly as directed. Do not use more or less of it or use it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
If you are using ketoconazole cream, your symptoms should improve at the beginning of your treatment. Continue to use ketoconazole cream even if you are feeling well. If you stop using ketoconazole cream too soon, your infection may not be completely cured, and your symptoms may return.
Use this medication on the skin only. Clean and thoroughly dry the area to be treated. Apply enough medication to cover the affected skin and some of the surrounding skin. After applying this medication, wash your hands. Do not wrap, cover or bandage the area unless directed to do so by your doctor.
Do not let ketoconazole cream get into your eyes, nose or mouth, and do not swallow the medication. If you do get ketoconazole cream in your eyes, wash them with plenty of water. Use this medication regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. Remember to use it at the same time(s) each day.

Symptoms should improve at the beginning of your treatment with ketoconazole cream. Continue to use ketoconazole cream until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if you feel your infection has improved. Stopping the medication too early may allow the fungus to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse of the infection.

Keep this medication in the container it comes in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Protect the medication from light and do not allow it to freeze.
It is important to keep all medication out of sight and reach of children as many containers (such as weekly pill minders and those for eye drops, creams, patches and inhalers) are not child-resistant and young children can open them easily. To protect young children from poisoning, always lock safety caps and immediately place the medication in a safe location — one that is up and out of their sight and reach.
Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed.
Unneeded medications should be disposed of in special ways to ensure that pets, children and other people cannot consume them. However, you should not flush this medication down the toilet. Instead, the best way to dispose of your medication is through a medicine take-back program. Talk to your pharmacist or contact your local garbage/recycling department to learn about take-back programs in your community.

If someone swallows ketoconazole cream, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.
-
Keep all appointments with your doctor.
Do not let anyone else use your medication. Your prescription is probably not refillable. If you still have symptoms of infection after you finish the ketoconazole, call your doctor.
It is important for you to keep a written list of all the prescription and nonprescription (over the counter) medicines you are taking, as well as any products such as vitamins, minerals or other dietary supplements. You should bring this list with you each time you visit a doctor or if you are admitted to a hospital. It is also important information to carry with you in case of emergencies.
